a group of tourists from tijuana returning from big bear lake. >>> some california cities are battling the state over medical marijuana and for the first time the state supreme court is getting involved. the court will hear arguments today on whether local governments can ban medical marijuana pot clubs even though it's legal at the state level. , the city of san jose decided to turn off 900 street lights throughout the day. there were some on roads and also in residential neighborhoods. the decision was made because of the budget. the city just reviewed their budget report and in that, it was decided that turning the lights on should be a priority. $44,000 has been set aside for the equipment and the maintenance of the lights. some residents had no idea the streets were darked on purpose. they reacted to the news this morning. >> they put the money to light up everything, it's good. it's good for people's safety. >> reporter: starting in march, approximately 225 street lights will be turned on each month which should improve public safety as well as the appearance of the roads. it's unknown which streets will city wants residents to be patient. coming up in the next hour of "mornings on 2," hear from a woman who said she was forced to be in the dark early in the morning while she waited to get to work. we'll explain -- coming up. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> 7:05. oakland police inves

they reported their experiences and their impressions of santa fe combat the old royal city. and many of them could not believe that a royal city had houses made of mud. there was a little bit of culture shock. others took the exotic feel of the place in the beautiful mountain setting right away and that is true today. santa fe inspires strong emotions. for example a man named chris wilson who is an architectural historian at the university of new mexico wrote a book not too long ago called the myth of santa fe in which he documents the evolution of santa fe's style and quiet the civic fathers decided that we needed to see the look of an earlier time to attract tourism and why he feels that is not necessarily an advantage for santa fe's culture and certainly not to advance authentic indigenous architecture. a famous novel was written in the latter part of the 19th century that is still in print today. it has nothing at all to do with new mexico. it was an accident of chance that the author was general lou wallace who wrote ben-hur, a tale of the christ. the last three chapters were written in

. as you expect at 5:07, light flow of traffic out of the north bay into the city. the cones have been moved to the northbound direction. you're ready for the morning commute but they're just waiting for it. slowing on the maps southbound 280 around the bend where the arrow is crossing over 101. we do see unusually slow traffic flow. no incidents reported for chp but i'll track that. it should clear up over the next few. slower moving vehicles. here northbound 280 the crash there has been removed from lanes. better news that's why you have the thumbs up. there's slowing through the area which had a flashing lights and we'll track that. so far no problems through the peninsula. we'll give you a live look outside to see how the traffic flow goes across the bay. there it is westbound taillights. no problems for either direction of the san mateo bridge. oakland moves slowly for the nimitz. back to you. >> all right. thanks so much. spring training finally here. the giants pitchers and catchers expected to report today. we'll take you live to arizona for a preview next. >>> a crackling elec

, i hope you don't mind i sat down. i don't mean i am tired, everyone is tired, but the city, new orleans, feels like it got the wind kicked out of it if you are a 49er fan. we are at the cafe, the coffee is a necessity so that needed to happen. the bengneits look delicious but there is no joy. fans last night at the superdome having a good time, super decked out for the game, with so much hope going into the game and so much love and support for the 49ers. it was a great game and that is the sentiment from fans we talked with. >> it was a good game. it started off rough and they started to catch up and it was so close. >> did you thing they had it in. >> yes, i think they did. we thought they did. >> did they blow it? >> no. >> the superdome blew a fuse, so to speak and they say it was something to do with the system that caused the power outage but the lights are on here at the cafe and there are raven fans. i talked with them. they admit it was a great game and the 49ers made them very nervous but they are deleader rouse because they have not gone home yet this morning. live in

a deadly shooting that happened just a few hours ago. they tell us a man was shot in the city's western edition. alex savidge is live there now. what can you tell us so far? >> reporter: we are getting very limited information from police this morning. that is because it's so early on in this investigation. a sergeant that was out here confirmed a man was shot and killed. he was found right over near this corner. near the intersection of hayes and webster. an anonymous caller reported gunfire in this area around 2:00 this morning. we'll show you that video. officers were out here for most of the morning. police tell us the victim was rushed to the hospital after suffering at least one gunshot wound. he died there from his injuries. homicide investigators searching for the shooter involved here. a sergeant told me they don't have a description on the person to put out. in just a couple minutes ago i talked to one woman who told me she heard one gunshot and saw this crime scene. >> it sounded like a gunshot and i knew somebody was dead. police know that sound. it's bad. >> reporter: so as

mateo bridge, the tillites towards foster city. east bound into a word and the golden gate bridge with a pretty easy drive. with areas of dense fog. >> we begin this morning with news out of the east bay. where police in pittsburg are searching for a hit and run suspect who injured a woman and her three young children. the incident happened on crestview drive, last night near leland road. two of the children were on their bikes. the third. in a stroller. all four victims were taken to hospitals. one of the children was airlifted to children's hospital in oakland. police have not yet released a suspect description. >> police are searching for two suspects who they say brutually attacked an elderly woman during a home invasion in san jose. you're looking at a sketch of one of the suspects. they say it all started last friday night when a 75- year-old woman noticed two men outside trying to break into her daughter's car. the woman opened a home windo and tried to scare the men away. that's when she was attacked by one of the suspects. the victim's son-in-law says he's in disbelief ov

a big city like manhattan, right? >> of course. it's a shock wave, basically. the physics of it is it hits the earth's atmosphere and feels like a brick wall to it. because of how fast it is moving. and when you hit a brick wall you basically explode. that's what happened here. exploded in midair. that shock wave shatters glass or anything sort of fragile and breakable over a huge radius. remember the oklahoma city bomb that destroyed the building it hit, but of course much glass was broken in the surrounding area. that's the effect of a shock wave air blast of an explosion of this kind. >> this seems to have come without warning. is this the sort of thing that scientists aren't able to detect in the atmosphere? >> yeah. below a certain size asteroid, they come in without warning. exactly. above a certain size, a radar can detect them. the military certainly has a smaller threshold for what they can see coming in. by the time you see them coming in, there's no defense against them. something this size is not going to render the human species exstint. something large enough

in castro valley. 56 in richmond, a little bit closer on the coast, cooler. dealey city, 70's and santa rosa. -- daly city this storm tracker pattern that we saw in the month of january it is going to stay dry. this is where we should be with rainfall totals for this time of year. but 6 in., in san francisco, we should see 5 in. however, we are well below for this time of year. the only areas in santa rosa, we desperately need the rainfall but we're not going to be getting it. this dry weather will continue for this week, the weekend and actually pretty warm. it is more like springtime. with even low 70's. >> catherine: an owl has a close call after getting hit by an s-u-v on the florida turnpike. the owl got stuck inside an s-u-v thursday night when a woman hit the bird as she was driving. the woman assumed the owl was road kill.but he survived and slipped through the s-u-v grill. afternoon that she noticed the owl caged in her s-u-v. she called florida fish and wildlife and an officer opened the hood and freed the bird. >> coming up speed hymps in the next edition of people behaving badly.
